The Numbers That Tell the Story
In 2012, when you posted something on your Facebook business page, roughly 16% of your followers saw it. That means if you had 1,000 followers, about 160 people saw each post organically.
By 2018, that number had dropped to around 6%. By 2023, studies showed organic reach averaging 1.5% to 2.5% for most business pages. Today, posting without paying reaches almost no one.
Instagram started with much better organic reach — brands in 2016 routinely reached 20-30% of their followers. That number has now fallen to single digits for most business accounts.
Why Did This Happen?
There are two main reasons.
First, content competition. In 2012, there were far fewer pages and creators posting on Facebook. Your post faced little competition in the feed. Today, there are millions of pages, creators, friends, and ads all competing for the same screen time. There is simply too much content for the algorithm to show everything.
Second, Meta and Google are businesses. Organic reach decline is deliberately managed. When businesses could reach their audience for free, there was no reason to pay for ads. Reducing organic reach pushed businesses toward paid advertising. Facebook's advertising revenue has grown every year since — this is not a coincidence.
What This Means for Small Businesses in India
If you built your business on Facebook followers and page likes, that audience is now largely inaccessible without paying to reach them. Many small business owners in India spend significant time creating and posting content — and almost none of their followers see it.
Posting good content still has value — for credibility, social proof, and for the small percentage of people who do see it. But relying on organic reach as your primary growth strategy in 2025 is not realistic.
What Actually Works Now
Paid ads on Meta and Google remain the most reliable way to reach new customers. Even a small daily budget (₹200–500/day) consistently outperforms organic posting in terms of reach and leads generated.
Reels and short-form video still get better organic reach than static posts on both Instagram and Facebook — Meta actively promotes Reels to compete with YouTube and TikTok. If you are going to invest in organic content, video is where the algorithm still gives some free reach.
WhatsApp Business remains an underused channel with high open rates in India — sending updates to opted-in customers via WhatsApp broadcasts is still largely organic and effective.
